Mechanical Engineering Opens the ME Design Space, a New Home for Creative Making

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has named its newly renovated machine shop the ME Design Space and held an opening ceremony on June 22 at 2:00 p.m. in Room RA110A. The name was chosen through a naming contest open to the university community. “ME” stands for Mechanical Engineering and also for “me,” each individual student, reflecting an open creative space where anyone can freely imagine, design and build.

The ceremony brought together the department’s faculty, students and staff, as well as distinguished guests including Professor Emeritus Nahmkeon Hur, whose gift to the department’s development fund made the new space possible; Dean Jinwook Burm of the College of Engineering; and former dean Professor Jeong-Woo Choi. Participants celebrated the opening and shared their hope that the ME Design Space will become the center of students’ creative design and fabrication.

The renovated ME Design Space goes beyond a conventional machining lab: it is a creative making space where students can design their ideas, build them with their own hands and turn them into prototypes. With a more comfortable and safer environment and a wider range of fabrication equipment, it will support design and fabrication courses and project work for undergraduate and graduate students. Building on the opening, the department plans to strengthen hands-on education and creative problem-solving and to keep expanding an environment where students experience the full process from design to fabrication.
